I only had three hours of sleep.
Our flight was at 5:20 so we had to be at the Centennial two hours before. After 3 cups of coffee, I pushed myself to get a cab and I was on the road. Halfway through I remembered that I forgot to bring my asthma inhaler. I was already late and there was no drugstore open yet.
What the freaking heck, I told myself. I can always buy the medicine there if ever. I’m actually more concerned on the safety of the place where we’re going. I just saw in the research that Siocon Valley was MILF country; locals were even salvaged because of the political drift and uncertainty. To make things worse, I’m going there to document the mining community and the subject was a bit sensitive especially because over the years, small scale mining operations were put to stop by the government for the destruction that they create. I didn’t know what to expect really. All I know is that I’m excited but at the same time I’m scared.
When we arrived in Zamboanga City, we only had an hour or so to have breakfast and to be briefed by our guide before we continue our trip inside the jungle. It will be another 4 hours trip on the rough road. We were accompanied by three soldiers. I even became more scared after seeing them. They were complete with full battle gear. It is as if we’re going to a military operation or something.
After four hours of rattling and swaying up in the van, we were greeted by the clear sea side view of the Zamboanga peninsula. I’m amazed with the magnificent view of the clouds that has enveloped the forest. And all the worries that I had awhile ago was washed away. I know that God is with me.
After shooting the village proper, we were greeted by the members of the Subanon tribe. They even danced for the camera. And to end the presentation, an old woman sang a very old native song. She cried just before she finished it. I don’t know what it meant but I felt the very spirit of the song. I was teary eyed myself.
This will be an amazing and an enriching trip.
I can’t wait for tomorrow.
